Nicola Vidi Morrell ~ Painting and Sculpture
Sculpture
Artist's Statement
I am a London-based artist working primarily in oil painting, informed by sculptural thinking and a deep engagement with material. Since 2011, my practice has centred on the physicality of paint — its weight, resistance, texture and capacity to hold time. For me, surface, structure and build-up are not secondary elements, they are integral to meaning.
My work moves between abstraction and suggestion. I plan and build my paintings in layers, allowing form to emerge through accumulation, restraint and repeated adjustment. I am less interested in narrative than in evoking a response through presence — through the tension between control and chance, density and space. Paint becomes both substance and language, something constructed as much as composed.
My materially focused approach has been shaped by sustained studio practice and critical exchange, including time as a studio holder at Second Floor Studios and Arts, and later at Thameside Studios. I currently paint regularly at The Atelier, Conservatoire Blackheath and am a member of the Blackheath Art Society.
I have exhibited across South East London and Kent, including at St Michael’s Art Gallery, Capital Art Gallery and Trispace Gallery.
Alongside my studio practice, I have extensive experience teaching art, design and technology. I have led workshops in oil painting, encaustic and sculpture, and have taught across education sectors. Teaching informs my practice — reinforcing a commitment to skill, material knowledge and the disciplined intimacy of making works.
